Controversial Remarks During Campaign
Amit Shah was referring to Kejriwal’s recent statement that the AAP chief would avoid returning to jail if the public voted for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Earlier this month, Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in March in connection with the liquor policy case, was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court to campaign for his party. However, the court directed Kejriwal to refrain from performing administrative duties as Delhi’s chief minister.
Misuse of Court’s Verdict, Says Amit Shah
In an interview with ANI, Shah criticized Kejriwal’s comment, suggesting it implied that a victory for the AAP would protect him from judicial consequences. Shah argued this misuse of the court’s verdict constituted contempt.
“I believe this is a clear contempt of the Supreme Court. He seems to suggest that if he wins, even if he is guilty, the Supreme Court will not send him to jail. The judges who pronounced the judgement need to see if their decision is being misused,” Shah stated.
Special Treatment by Supreme Court (Amit Shah}
Shah emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision was not a routine judgement and involved special consideration. The Enforcement Directorate had opposed Kejriwal’s bail, arguing there was no precedent for releasing an individual solely for election campaigning. The court ordered Kejriwal to return to Tihar Jail on June 2, a day after the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
Assault Allegations and Further Criticisms {Amit Shah }
In addition, Shah criticized Kejriwal over the alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal. Kejriwal’s personal assistant, Bibhav Kumar, is accused of manhandling the former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief.
“Right now, he (Arvind Kejriwal) is embroiled in another issue (alleged assault on Swati Maliwal by his aide). Let him resolve that first; then we’ll see what happens,” Shah remarked.
Campaign Trail Statements {Amit Shah}
During his campaign in the national capital, Kejriwal claimed that a vote for the AAP (“Broom” symbol) would prevent his return to Tihar Jail.
“Now, they are saying I will have to go to jail again. It is in your hands whether I go to jail. If you choose lotus (the BJP’s symbol), I will have to return to jail. If you choose an INDIA bloc candidate, I won’t have to go to jail,” Kejriwal stated, as reported by PTI .

Kejriwal also claimed that he was incarcerated because of his contributions to improving education, building schools, and opening Mohalla Clinics.
Amit Shah Dismisses AAP’s National Ambitions
Responding to Arvind Kejriwal’s recent announcement of ten guarantees to the people, Amit Shah said the AAP leader’s comments need not be taken seriously as the party is contesting only 22 Lok Sabha seats. “Don’t take him so seriously, he (AAP) is only fighting 22 seats. And he is giving a guarantee for the entire country. I will waive off the electricity bill of people etc. You are only contesting on 22 seats, where will your government come from?” the Home Minister asked.
Modi’s Leadership Until 2029 and Beyond
Speaking on Kejriwal’s allegation that the BJP would go in for a change of leadership within a few months of the 2024 election results, Shah affirmed that PM Modi would remain the leader till 2029 and beyond. “I want to make it clear again, Modiji will remain till 2029. And Kejriwal ji, there is no good news for you. Even after 2029, Modiji is our leader. We will contest elections under his leadership,” Shah said.
Election Context
Four phases of Lok Sabha polls have been held, with voting concluding on June 1 and results on June 4. Voting for Delhi’s seven seats is scheduled for May 25. The Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress are contesting the elections in alliance in the national capital, with AAP contesting four seats and Congress three seats. (ANI).
