Nitish Kumar Set 2 Negotiate Hard for Cabinet Positions, Early Polls, and More Funds right now

With the BJP not securing enough seats to govern alone, they now need allies like Nitish Kumar to form the next government. Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, is gearing up for some tough negotiations. He’s expected to push for more Cabinet positions, increased central funds, early state elections, and special status for Bihar. The 12 Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) MPs are now pivotal for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

This is a significant moment. The BJP, for the first time since 2014, hasn’t hit the majority mark in the Lok Sabha on its own. While the NDA comfortably surpasses the 272-seat threshold, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) won a significant 233 seats.

What’s on Nitish Kumar’s Wishlist?

Inside sources reveal that Nitish Kumar is eyeing four to five Cabinet berths. Before the elections, JD(U) was promised at least three Cabinet positions and one Minister of State (MoS) role. A JD(U) leader shared, “We’re in a much stronger position now. We’re aiming for at least four Cabinet posts and maybe even another MoS spot.”

The JD(U) has its sights set on key portfolios like Railways, Rural Development, and Water Resources. These ministries could help bring substantial infrastructure projects to Bihar. “We want ministries that will give us the leverage to fast-track Bihar’s development,” the leader explained.

Early state elections are also on Kumar’s agenda. Given the favorable mood towards JD(U) and NDA, which won 30 of Bihar’s 40 Lok Sabha seats, Kumar believes early polls could bolster JD(U)’s presence in the 243-member state assembly, where they currently hold 45 seats. “We’re thinking of having elections in about six months. It needs the BJP and other allies’ agreement, but we’re pushing hard for it,” said another JD(U) insider.

The Pushback and Funding Needs

However, not everyone is on board. State BJP leaders are resisting the call for early elections, preferring to stick to the original schedule of October-November.

Another significant ask from Kumar is more central funds. He plans to use these funds to support the Bihar Laghu Udhyami Yojana, a scheme launched in February to provide ₹2 lakh assistance to 9.4 million poor families identified in the 2023 socio-economic survey. The state has already allocated ₹2.5 lakh crore over five years for the scheme and is seeking special status for Bihar to unlock even more funds.

JD(U) lawmaker Khalid Anwar stressed the party’s dedication to Bihar’s progress and lifting up the poor identified in the caste survey. “We want to help these families with financial aid for employment and entrepreneurship,” he said.

K.C. Tyagi, another JD(U) leader, reiterated the long-standing demand for special status for Bihar. “Now that we are a key ally in the NDA, we are pressing this demand even more strongly,” he noted.
